Multi-Panel AI Images: Comics, Storyboards and Character Sheets
Plan panels, reading order, and a character brief for AI comics and storyboards. Check panel count, identity, and text before assembling a final layout.

Define the sheet before the individual pictures
For a comic, storyboard or character sheet, specify the overall grid, what stays the same and what changes in each panel. Then inspect every panel. Asking for “the same character” is a requirement, not a guarantee.
A single canvas with several panels is also a different task from preserving a character across separately generated images. This guide offers a planning method; it does not report grid-size success rates or establish a best model.
Write three parts
- Layout: panel count, rows and columns, reading order and gutters.
- Shared subject: identity, clothing, objects, medium and light that should stay consistent.
- Panel instructions: the action or view in each numbered panel.
Start with only the changes the story needs. Fewer simultaneous changes make failures easier to diagnose, though they do not guarantee compliance.

Choose panel count from the final use
At a fixed canvas size, more panels leave less space per panel. Choose the count based on how large the sheet will be shown and how much detail each panel needs. There is no universal nine-panel ceiling or guaranteed four-panel success rate in the evidence presented here.
For equal panels with no gutters, a grid with c columns, r rows and per-panel width-to-height ratio p has a canvas ratio of c × p : r. Gutters and captions change the calculation. For example, square panels arranged in three columns and two rows need a 3:2 canvas before gutters—not a portrait canvas.

Extreme Close-Up (ECU): Macro detail with intense focus on a key feature (eyes, hands, logo, texture). 8. Low-Angle Shot (Worm's-Eye View): Looking up at the subject from ground level (spectacular/heroic feel). 9. High-Angle Shot (Bird's-Eye View): Looking down on the subject from above. Ensure strict consistency: The same people/objects, same clothing, and same lighting across all 9 panels. Check continuity separately from layout

A correct grid can still contain different people. A coherent character can still appear in the wrong layout. Score those issues separately. The same-prompt experiment shows this distinction in one dated three-panel task.

When a result drifts
Try simplifying the problematic panel or reducing the number of changes. Where supported, provide an appropriate reference image and identify what it should preserve. If one region remains wrong, an available local edit or separate panel assembly may be more practical than regenerating the entire sheet.
These are options to test, not measured fixes. Keep failed outputs so you can see whether a change actually helped. For speech bubbles, manual lettering gives direct control over spelling and placement; if text is generated, inspect every character and the reading order.
