Why AI lifestyle photos come out looking like adverts
Ask any model for a lifestyle image and you tend to get a catalogue shot: clean light, a centred subject, a background melted into bokeh. Nothing in it looks like something that happened.
That is not the model failing. It is the vocabulary. Across 9,599 published prompts in the LocalBanana gallery, the most-requested lighting term is studio lighting (6.5%), the most-requested lens is 85mm (4.9%), and 11.1% of prompts ask for shallow depth of field by name. Those three choices are the definition of a produced photograph. Lifestyle work needs the opposite of all three, and the words for it sit at the rare end of the corpus.
4.9% vs 0.75%
85mm against 24mm in the corpus
the portrait lens is named more than six times as often as the phone lens
11.1%
of prompts ask for shallow depth of field
the single most reliable tell that an image was staged
1.5%
ask for overcast light
against 6.5% for studio lighting
Where the numbers come from
Exact term counts over 9,599 published gallery prompts, August 2026 — every item with a prompt longer than 20 characters, stored with the model that ran it and the image it produced. These are frequencies of what people wrote, not a quality ranking.
The five decisions that separate a snapshot from a shoot
Everything below is subtractive. You are not adding production value, you are naming which production value to leave out.
| Decision | Shoot look | Snapshot look |
|---|---|---|
| Lens | 85mm (4.9% of prompts) | 24mm (0.75%) |
| Depth | shallow depth of field (11.1%) | Background readable, f/4 or deeper |
| Light | studio lighting (6.5%) | overcast (1.5%), window light (1.1%) |
| Moment | A held pose | Mid-action, caught between beats |
| Gaze | Straight down the lens | Off-frame, or unaware of the camera |
1. The lens: 24mm, not 85mm
An 85mm lens flatters faces by compressing them and separating them from the background. That is precisely why it reads as taken by a photographer. Phone cameras sit around 24mm, which does the opposite: it stretches whatever is closest, keeps the whole room in focus, and puts the subject inside the space rather than in front of it.
24mm appears in 0.75% of prompts. 85mm appears in 4.9%. Which means the single most effective lifestyle edit is also the one almost nobody makes.
✕ Bad
lifestyle portrait of a woman in a cafe, 85mm, f/1.4, beautiful bokeh, professional photography✓ Good
iPhone-style photo, 24mm wide lens, f/2.2, whole cafe readable behind her including the next table and the counter, mild wide-angle distortion at the frame edges, handheld at chest height
Coffee Loo Innocent Sin
Nano Banana ProPrompt▾
Ultra photorealistic mirror selfie, 8k resolution, iPhone 15 Pro, 24mm wide lens. Mid 20s European blonde female with honey blonde messy bun, face-framing strands, green eyes, slim hourglass body. Cute coffee shop bathroom location, afternoon atmosphere. Mirror selfie pose with subtle arch, angled hips, soft innocent eyes with guilty smile. Ultra thin fitted cream cardigan (tight, braless, subtle outline), light grey low-rise mini skirt (tight hips). Background: clean tiles, tiny sink, hand soap, coffee cup in frame. Soft warm lighting with clean highlights, iPhone realism. High-end Instagram realism style, clean soft lighting, natural pores, no smoothing. 2:3 aspect ratio.
The other half of that instruction is the aperture. If you carry over f/1.8 from portrait prompts, you get phone framing with cinema separation — a combination that exists in no real camera and reads as fake immediately. Name f/2.8 to f/5.6 and let the background stay legible.
2. The light: whatever the room already has
studio lighting at 6.5% is the corpus default and it is fatal here. The lifestyle equivalents are all in the bottom half of the table: overcast at 1.5%, window light at 1.1%, natural light at 3.8%.

}Two more lifestyle-specific moves that almost never appear in prompts:
- Mixed colour temperature. Real interiors have a cool window and a warm lamp fighting each other. Ask for it:
daylight through the window and a warm tungsten lamp in the same frame, white balance split between them. - Under-lit corners. Studio light reaches everywhere. Rooms do not.
the far side of the room falling into shadow, no fill lightis one clause and it removes most of the produced feeling.

}3. The moment: mid-action, not a held pose
A pose is a moment that has stopped. Lifestyle images work when the subject is caught between two positions, which you have to specify because the model's default is a stable, resolved posture.
Verbs that produce it:
caught mid-step, weight on the back foot
turning towards something off-frame, hair still moving
reaching across the table, arm crossing in front of the face
laughing at the end of the laugh, eyes almost closed
adjusting a sleeve, not looking at what the hands are doing
half-standing out of the chair

Tokyo Night Candid Capture
Nano Banana ProPrompt▾
Ultra-realistic candid smartphone photograph, 9:16 vertical. Nighttime on a quiet Tokyo city sidewalk beside a building with white ceramic tile walls. The subject is walking past the camera, partially side-on, captured mid-step in a rushed, accidental moment. The subject reacts instinctively to being photographed: turning her head back mid-walk as if surprised, raising one hand close to the lens to partially block the camera, shy, restrained smile forming as she suppresses laughter, body angled in half-profile while continuing to walk forward, motion carries her slightly out of frame, imperfect framing. Shot on a modern smartphone, handheld, rushed capture. Strong uncontrolled camera shake. Heavy directional motion blur across the raised hand, hair, and face. Flash-only lighting fired mid-motion. Harsh flash highlights on skin and hand. Deep surrounding darkness. Extremely noisy. Heavily blurred. Raw smartphone look.

}
}4. The gaze: decide whether the camera is a person
There are exactly two honest options in lifestyle work, and they need different prompts.
The camera is a friend. The subject knows it is there, plays to it, and the framing is close and slightly careless. This is the selfie and the boyfriend-POV register.

Boyfriend POV — A Quiet Gaze
Nano Banana ProPrompt▾
A photorealistic vertical photo (9:16) captured from a boyfriend point of view. Medium close-up composition, the subject occupies roughly 60% of the left side of the frame, with a slightly top-down angle, as if taken casually by someone sitting across the table. A light-colored round wooden table edge appears in the lower-left foreground. The subject is a young Asian woman with short brown hair and soft bangs. She wears a black half-zip high-neck fleece sweatshirt, thick and soft in texture. A black square patch with white “alo” lettering is clearly visible on her left upper sleeve. She leans forward naturally, left elbow resting on the table, hand supporting her cheek or chin. She looks directly at the camera with a gentle, relaxed expression. The background is a busy but blurred coffee shop interior: industrial exposed ceiling pipes, track lighting, a distant service counter with a red menu board, and softly blurred customers in dark clothing. Shallow depth of field keeps the subject sharp and the background creamy and soft. Camera feel: 50mm or 85mm prime lens Wide aperture (f/1.8 – f/2.0) Warm indoor lighting Natural skin tones Overall mood: candid, intimate, everyday, a spontaneous lifestyle moment typical of social media boyfriend POV photography.

}The camera is not there. The subject is unaware, the framing is wider, and the instruction has to be explicit or the model will turn the head towards the lens by default.

Morning Forest Hike Candid Shot
MidjourneyPrompt▾
Candid scene activity , do not look at camera, in distance. --ar 4:3 --sref 20567344 --raw --preview --profile p9rjxxz
What does not work is the middle: a subject who is clearly posing while the prompt claims the photo is candid. That contradiction is in the list of self-cancelling instruction pairs.
5. The imperfections you have to ask for
Models clean up by default. Every flaw below has to be requested by name, and each one is a single clause.
| Flaw | Clause to paste |
|---|---|
| Camera shake | slight motion blur on the hands, everything else sharp |
| Bad framing | horizon two degrees off level, one shoulder cropped by the frame edge |
| Phone processing | slightly crushed shadows, over-sharpened edges, mild HDR flattening |
| Low light noise | visible luminance noise in the shadows, ISO 3200 |
| Real rooms | unmade bed behind her, cable on the floor, a mug left on the windowsill |
| Real skin | visible pores and a spot on the chin, no retouching |

Elves in the Snowscape
Nano Banana ProPrompt▾
Editorial winter poster style multi-panel collage with spontaneous iPhone photography aesthetic (candid, warm, realistic). Soft snowflakes with delicate analog grain and slight handheld imperfections. Reference Adherence: Strictly follow the provided photo for facial reference with zero deviation. Preserve facial proportions, skin texture, expression, and identity features with 100% accuracy. Do not stylize or alter facial features. Consistent Elements: - Subject Wardrobe: Short faux fur coat, black leggings, classic UGG boots (minimalist, cozy, very wintry style) - Primary Device: iPhone 17 Pro Max in silver, held by the subject in relevant frames - Color Palette: Warm amber, soft red, pine green, soft winter gray Layout Configuration: Panel 1 (Top Left): Store window reflection photo at dusk. Faint Christmas lights, garlands, frosted glass edges, warm highlights on fur. Subject holding phone partially covering face. Grazing silhouettes, layered reflections, soft ghosting, natural glass curvature distortion. Panel 2 (Top Right): Ultra-wide street scene portrait (snowy sidewalk/Christmas market). Close-up, tilted downward camera angle. Subject casually leaning forward, hands in coat pockets. Black leggings and UGG boots clearly visible. Falling snow with slight motion blur. Subtle perspective distortion to enhance handheld authenticity. Panel 3 (Bottom Right): Intimate overhead selfie with warm street or cafe lighting. Holding a takeaway festive drink (coffee or mulled wine). Visible wired earphones. Clear detailed fur texture and winter fabrics. Soft grain enhancing nostalgic holiday atmosphere. Graphic Overlay: Minimalist Apple Music style mini player floating in the center of the collage, showing a popular Christmas song (e.g., 'Last Christmas' or 'All I Want for Christmas Is You'). Flat clean render without shadows.
The last row matters most. A perfectly retouched face inside an otherwise messy frame is the most common way a lifestyle image gives itself away.
Three complete lifestyle prompts
Copy them whole into the generator. Each is 80–110 words, which is the band where prompts stop describing a subject and start specifying a photograph.
Morning at home, window light
Subject: woman in her late twenties, hair still messy from sleep, no
makeup, oversized grey t-shirt, barefoot
Action: mid-turn away from the kitchen counter, holding a mug in both
hands, looking down at it, not at the camera
Setting: small flat kitchen, dishes from last night still in the sink,
a plant on the windowsill, morning light through an uncovered window
Light: north-facing window light from camera left as the only source,
far side of the room falling into shadow, no fill
Camera: 24mm, f/2.8, handheld at chest height, slightly off level,
whole kitchen readable behind her
Style: candid phone photo, mild HDR flattening, visible skin texture
City street, evening
Subject: man in his thirties, denim jacket, canvas bag on one shoulder
Action: caught mid-step crossing the road, head turned to look at
something off-frame right, unaware of the camera
Setting: wet city pavement after rain, shop signs and traffic behind
him, other pedestrians blurred by their own movement
Light: mixed practicals — warm shop windows, a cool streetlight
overhead, no flash, ambient only
Camera: 35mm, f/4, eye level from across the street, subject small in
the frame with the street occupying two thirds of it
Style: documentary street photography, slight motion blur, visible
noise in the shadows, colours left as the streetlights made them
Cafe, overcast afternoon
Subject: two friends at a corner table, one mid-sentence with a hand
raised, the other laughing with eyes almost shut
Setting: small cafe, other customers visible at nearby tables, plates
and half-finished drinks in the foreground
Light: overcast daylight through a large window, flat and even, no
shadow edge anywhere, no artificial light
Camera: 24mm, f/4, taken from the next table at seated height, one
shoulder of a stranger cropping the left edge of the frame
Style: unposed phone snapshot, horizon slightly tilted, nothing
centred, natural colour
The three mistakes that give a lifestyle image away
✕ Bad
candid lifestyle photo, natural and authentic, beautiful woman, 85mm, f/1.4, dreamy bokeh, golden hour, perfect skin, professional✓ Good
Unposed phone snapshot, 24mm, f/4, whole room readable, overcast light through the window, subject mid-turn looking off-frame, visible skin texture, horizon slightly off level- Shallow depth of field. Requested in 11.1% of all prompts and the fastest way to make a snapshot look art-directed. Phones do produce blur, but far less of it and at a different distance.
- Saying
candidand describing a pose. The word does no work on its own. What works is the verb —mid-step,mid-turn,reaching— plus an explicitnot looking at the camerawhen that is what you mean. - A clean room. A tidy, empty, evenly lit background reads as a set. Two pieces of clutter, named individually, fix it.
FAQ
How do I make AI images look like real phone photos?
Three changes, in order of impact: use 24mm instead of 85mm, use f/2.8 to f/4 instead of f/1.8 so the background stays readable, and ask for at least one flaw by name — slight motion blur, an off-level horizon, or visible noise in the shadows. In our corpus 24mm appears in only 0.75% of prompts, so this is a rarely-taken route.
Why do my candid prompts still look posed?
Because candid is a label, not an instruction. The model needs the mechanism: a body caught between two positions, and an explicit statement about where the eyes are. Adding not looking at the camera, attention on what the hands are doing does more than any number of authenticity adjectives.
Which model is best for lifestyle photography?
Nano Banana, on current usage: 45.5% of its prompts in our corpus carry camera specifications, against 28.0% for GPT Image and 9.6% for Midjourney, and it responds well to being briefed like a photographer. The full split is in Nano Banana vs Midjourney.
How long should a lifestyle prompt be?
80–150 words. That is the band where a prompt can carry subject, action, setting, light and camera at once — and in our corpus it is where median engagement steps up sharply, from 5 to 19 median views between the 30–79 and 80–149 word bands. Note that engagement is also affected by publication date and feed placement, so read that as correlation. The full length analysis is in what 9,667 AI prompts contain.
What lighting should I use for lifestyle images?
Ambient only. overcast (1.5% of prompts) for flat even daylight, window light (1.1%) when you want direction without hardness, and mixed practicals for interiors at night. Avoid studio lighting, which is the most-requested term in the corpus at 6.5% and the reason so many results look commercial. The full frequency table is in the lighting keyword guide.
