How to Make AI Images Look Real, Not AI-Generated
Inspect lighting, anatomy, materials, and composition in AI images, then test targeted changes to the prompt or editing workflow.

Start with a visible problem
To make an AI image feel more photographic, first identify what looks implausible: anatomy, material, light, focus or composition. Then change one relevant instruction and inspect the next result. A model limitation, missing reference or unsuitable generation setting can matter as much as the wording.
This is an editing checklist, not a tested recipe or a model ranking. The gallery examples illustrate visual choices; they do not establish which instruction caused an image or how reliably it can be reproduced.

Make the light readable
Instead of adding more mood adjectives, describe a source and the result you want to see. Softness and direction are separate decisions: a large diffused source can still make one side of a face brighter than the other.

Check the output rather than assuming the wording worked. Look at the nose shadow, reflected highlights and objects behind the subject.

Describe the photograph, not only camera numbers
A lens or aperture name can be an art-direction cue, but a generated image is not a physical camera simulation. If background separation matters, write the visible relationship: “near eye sharp, background softly blurred.” If the room matters, ask for it to remain readable.

}Keep texture local and believable
For skin, try specific details such as fine pores on the nose, faint freckles or a little forehead shine. Avoid requiring every imperfection at once. For a ceramic cup, ask for a ceramic surface rather than applying skin-like detail to everything.
There is no universal amount of texture that makes an image real. Inspect both the whole frame and a useful close-up; excess grain or exaggerated pores can be distracting.

Choose the moment and framing deliberately
A centred portrait can be a real photograph. An off-centre frame can be artificial. Pick a composition that serves the image instead of treating asymmetry as proof of realism.
For a candid direction, describe an action—turning toward a friend, reaching for a cup—and where the subject is looking. Check whether the hands and body can actually perform that action.

Revise one thing at a time
- Save the original image and prompt.
- Write down the most distracting visible defect.
- Change the relevant instruction, keeping the other inputs and settings stable where possible.
- Compare the new image with the original. Random variation means one improvement is not proof of a reliable rule.
- If an existing person's identity or a product must stay fixed, use a suitable reference and inspect those details separately. A text description cannot guarantee preservation.
A useful starting brief is: subject and action → setting → visible light → framing and focus → details to preserve. Include only decisions that matter for the image; no minimum word count is needed. How to read an image prompt explains this breakdown.
