How to Create Beautiful Phone Wallpapers with AI

A wallpaper is a layout problem, not a style problem
A phone wallpaper is the only image you see a hundred times a day and never actually look at — because half of it is covered by a clock, a row of widgets, and five rows of app icons. Most AI wallpapers fail on that occlusion, not on style: the face ends up behind the time, the detail you generated sits under the dock, and the whole thing gets zoomed and cropped the moment you tap Set.
This guide covers the three things that decide whether a generated image survives becoming a wallpaper: the ratio, the two dead bands, and where to leave negative space.
9:16 is not the shape of your screen
Check your device dimensions and the ratios available in the selected model. A 9:16 canvas is a useful vertical starting point when offered, but a taller screen may crop its sides when the image fills the height. Preview the wallpaper on the actual device before deciding the composition is finished.
Two consequences worth designing around:
- Nothing important within a thumb's width of either vertical edge. Text, a face, the interesting part of a silhouette — all at risk.
- Match the target shape when possible. A taller canvas may reduce side cropping on a tall screen, but still check the device preview.

The two dead bands
Look at your own lock-screen preview. Clock, widgets, shortcuts and notifications occupy different areas depending on the device, operating system and settings. Use their actual positions to mark areas where important detail should not go.
So the composition instruction is not "make it beautiful" — it is put the subject in the middle band and keep the other two quiet:
Vertical 9:16 wallpaper. Keep the top third visually quiet — no faces, text or fine
detail there, it will sit behind the clock and widgets. Keep the bottom fifth quiet
for the same reason. Place the subject in the middle band, slightly below centre.
Extend the background smoothly into both quiet zones. No borders, no frames,
no vignette that would draw the eye to the edges.
Leave negative space for the interface
Negative space is a quiet area around the subject. For a wallpaper, it gives the clock and icons a less busy background. Specify where that quiet area belongs rather than relying on the term alone.

Lock screen legibility: contrast under the clock
Clock colour and styling depend on the device and settings. Check the actual text over the image. If the clock crosses busy texture or mixed light and dark areas, simplify that region and adjust the supported clock appearance.
Commit to one end of the scale. Make the top band decisively dark or decisively light. A single saturated colour field is the most robust option there is:

Turning a 16:9 idea into a wallpaper
If a landscape image loses its subject when cropped, consider recomposing it vertically. Cropping remains suitable when the important elements already fit; regenerating can also change details you wanted to keep.
The rewrite is mechanical:
Take the same subject and style. Recompose for a vertical 9:16 frame:
move the subject into the lower-middle band, extend the background upward
so the top third becomes open sky / wall / gradient, remove any element that
was only there to fill horizontal width, and keep the horizon low.
No cropping of the original composition — build the vertical version natively.

Why does my wallpaper get zoomed and cropped when I set it?
