A wallpaper is a layout problem, not a style problem
A phone wallpaper is the only image you see a hundred times a day and never actually look at — because half of it is covered by a clock, a row of widgets, and five rows of app icons. Most AI wallpapers fail on that occlusion, not on style: the face ends up behind the time, the detail you generated sits under the dock, and the whole thing gets zoomed and cropped the moment you tap Set.
This guide covers the three things that decide whether a generated image survives becoming a wallpaper: the ratio, the two dead bands, and the one composition word almost nobody writes.
9:16 is not the shape of your screen
Every generator offers 9:16 as its vertical option, and it is the right choice — but it is not your screen. A 9:16 frame is 0.5625 wide for every 1 tall. Current phones are taller than that: roughly 19.5:9 on iPhones and up to 20:9 on many Android devices, which works out to about 0.46. Set a 9:16 image as wallpaper and the system scales it to fill the height, then trims the left and right edges.
Two consequences worth designing around:
- Nothing important within a thumb's width of either vertical edge. Text, a face, the interesting part of a silhouette — all at risk.
- A little extra height is free. If your generator offers a taller vertical option, take it; you lose nothing and gain crop margin.

The two dead bands
Look at your own lock screen and you will see the same layout every phone uses: a large clock and date in the upper area, a widget row directly under it, and at the bottom two shortcut buttons plus the home indicator. Those are the two bands where any detail you generate will be destroyed.
So the composition instruction is not "make it beautiful" — it is put the subject in the middle band and keep the other two quiet:
Vertical 9:16 wallpaper. Keep the top third visually quiet — no faces, text or fine
detail there, it will sit behind the clock and widgets. Keep the bottom fifth quiet
for the same reason. Place the subject in the middle band, slightly below centre.
Extend the background smoothly into both quiet zones. No borders, no frames,
no vignette that would draw the eye to the edges.
The home screen has the opposite requirement
On the lock screen you have a clear middle band. On the home screen, icons cover nearly the whole surface, so a busy wallpaper makes icon labels unreadable. The home-screen version of the same idea should be lower in contrast and lower in detail — same subject, softer treatment. Generate the two separately rather than reusing one image for both.
The word almost nobody writes: negative space
Across the 9,599 published prompts in the LocalBanana gallery, negative space appears in 2.7% — about one prompt in thirty-seven. For comparison, symmetry shows up in 5.1% and centered composition in 1.3%. For a portrait or a poster that scarcity does not matter much. For a wallpaper it is the single most load-bearing phrase you can add, because negative space is precisely what the clock and the icons need in order to be readable.

The system picks white or dark clock text based on the image, and it only has those two choices. A wallpaper whose top band is mid-tone — a busy sky, dappled leaves, a crowd — leaves the clock fighting the background whichever colour it picks. Two reliable fixes:

Turning a 16:9 idea into a wallpaper
Most of the best compositions you will find are landscape. Do not crop them — re-render them, because a vertical frame needs its own composition, not a slice of a horizontal one.
The rewrite is mechanical:
Take the same subject and style. Recompose for a vertical 9:16 frame:
move the subject into the lower-middle band, extend the background upward
so the top third becomes open sky / wall / gradient, remove any element that
was only there to fill horizontal width, and keep the horizon low.
No cropping of the original composition — build the vertical version natively.

What resolution should an AI phone wallpaper be?
Generate at the largest size your model offers at 9:16 and let the phone downscale — downscaling is free and always looks fine. The visible failure on phones is not resolution, it is banding: smooth gradients turn into visible stripes on OLED panels. Adding "subtle film grain" or "fine dithering" to the prompt fixes it more reliably than any resolution increase.
Why does my wallpaper get zoomed and cropped when I set it?
Because 9:16 is wider than a modern phone screen, so the system scales the image to fill the height and cuts the sides. Keep anything important away from the left and right edges, and if your generator offers a taller vertical ratio, use it.
How do I stop the clock from covering the subject's face?
