Camera Language in AI Prompts: Lenses, Apertures, Composition
Use lens, aperture, viewpoint, and depth-of-field language to describe a visual goal, while separating photographic concepts from actual model controls.

Camera vocabulary describes a look
In an image prompt, camera vocabulary helps express framing, viewpoint and focus. It is not the same as adjusting a physical lens. Writing 85mm, f/1.8 does not establish that the output follows those optical settings, and this article does not measure one phrasing against another.
Start with the visible result you need, then use camera terms where they clarify it. How to read an image prompt explains how these instructions fit beside subject, light and style.

Describe the focus, not only the blur
In photography, aperture, focal length and focus distance affect depth of field; background separation also changes the visible blur. Nikon’s bokeh guide explains that physical context. In a prompt, describe which feature stays sharp and what background detail you want to lose, rather than assuming an optical calculation will be enforced.

The second version makes the requested focus point and spatial arrangement explicit. This is a comparison of wording, not proof that it will produce a better result on every model.

Which focal length should you name?
First decide how much environment should appear and how close the viewpoint should feel. In photography, focal length affects field of view; Nikon’s focal-length guide explains the distinction. The following prompt cues are starting points to inspect, not fixed mappings from numbers to output geometry.

A lens number cannot rescue an ambiguous framing request. If the face looks distorted, inspect viewpoint and subject distance in the output; do not assume replacing one number with another guarantees a correction.

How to use aperture words cautiously
For a physical camera, a lower f-number means a larger aperture; other things equal, it can reduce depth of field. Nikon’s aperture explanation describes that relationship. A prompt token does not guarantee which parts of a face or product will be sharp.

Write the required focus coverage first. A numerical aperture can be an optional cue, but the result must pass your visible check even if the prompt contains the “right” number.

Framing: close-up, medium shot or full body?
Choose framing according to the information the picture needs to show. A face detail, a person’s gesture and a full outfit require different amounts of space.
If a label feels ambiguous, describe the crop directly: “head to waist, both hands visible” is a specific request you can check.
- Close-up — face fills the frame, background is texture only.
- Medium shot — waist-up, hands usable, background readable.
- Full body — the whole figure, which means the shoes, the pose and the floor all become your problem.
For a full-body image, include footwear or the ground surface when they matter. Check that the feet fit within the frame; writing “full body” does not guarantee an uncropped result.

Camera angle: low, eye level or high?

A high viewpoint can place more floor or tabletop behind the subject; a low viewpoint may include sky or ceiling. Choose the view that supports the composition and check the actual background.
State eye level when that is the intended viewpoint. Without a viewpoint instruction, the model has more freedom; this is not evidence that all models share one default angle.

These terms describe layout: symmetry asks for a balanced relationship across an axis, centred composition places an element near the centre, and negative space reserves a less busy region.
Name the relevant element and location. “Bottle centred; empty right third for copy” is more specific than “good composition.” Check whether extra objects or textures intrude into the reserved space.
For wallpapers or an image that will receive text, describe where the interface or copy will go and preview the result in that layout. A visually empty area can still be too bright, textured or small for readable type.
Negative space requested by position rather than as an adjective: empty at the top and bottom, subject in the middle band.

Begin with framing, viewpoint and what must stay in focus. Add a focal length or aperture only if it helps express your intention. There is no mandatory camera block for every image task.
Does writing 85mm or f/1.8 actually change the image?
They may influence the result, but this page does not measure their effect or guarantee compliance. Keep the visible requirement explicit and compare outputs on your chosen model. Do not infer a model’s training data or optical behavior from a plausible-looking image.
