Latitude: the part that fixes blown-out windows
The single most useful thing a 400-speed colour negative does is hold detail in the brightest part of the frame. Slide film clips. Negative film rolls off. That difference is the whole reason wedding photographers overexposed Portra by a stop for twenty years — pushing the exposure up brightens the shadows while the highlights simply compress instead of turning to white paste.
In a prompt, latitude is not communicated by the film name alone. You have to say what you want to happen at the top of the exposure range:

That result also does something 98% of the corpus does not: it names both the focal length and the aperture (35mm, f/1.4). If you only ever adopt one habit from this guide, make it that one — 11.1% of prompts ask for shallow depth of field and only 2.0% specify f/1.8, so most people are describing an effect and leaving the setting that causes it to chance.
Warm is a set, not a filter
Here is the failure mode: you write "warm golden tones", the model applies a global orange cast, skin goes tan, whites go cream, and the image looks graded rather than photographed.
Real Portra warmth comes from what is in front of the camera. Give the model warm surfaces and let the palette assemble itself: cream, oatmeal, camel, terracotta, walnut, unbleached linen, brass, aged paper, warm grey plaster.

The one substitution that fixes most Portra prompts
Replace "warm golden tones" with "warm-neutral palette, neutral white balance, warmth from the set not the grade". You keep the mood and stop the global orange cast. If a result still reads orange, the culprit is usually a second warm word further down the prompt — "golden hour", "amber", "sunset" — fighting for the same slider.
Skin: name the texture, not the beauty
"Beautiful skin" and "flawless skin" are retouching words. Models trained on a lot of commercial imagery will happily give you the plastic version. The seven words that cancel the Portra look
Each of these pulls a slider in the opposite direction to something the film block just asked for. Adding any one of them will usually win, because it is more specific than a stock name:

Film-stock names vary in how strongly a model has learned them, and there is no way to know from the outside. Run the A/B yourself — it takes four generations:
- Write the prompt with the subject, light, lens and aperture fully specified, and no film block. Generate twice.
- Append the Portra block, change nothing else. Generate twice.
- Compare the highlight edges, the shadow density and the skin at 100%.
If the four images are indistinguishable, the film name is decorative in that model and your results are coming from the light and lens description — which is fine, and worth knowing. A grid render makes the comparison quicker to read:
