Why "shot on film" alone gives you a plastic face

You add shot on Kodak Portra 400, film grain, 35mm to a portrait prompt and get back an image with a faint texture overlay on top of the same waxy, retouched face you had before.

That happens because film-stock keywords control colour and grain — the last ten per cent. The thing that actually makes a portrait read as film is upstream of the stock: where the light comes from, what lens is on the camera, and whether the skin is allowed to have texture. This guide is the portrait workflow around those three decisions. If you want the stock-by-stock colour science, that lives in the Kodak Portra 400 guide, the Fuji Pro 400H guide and the cinematic film looks guide.

Where these numbers come from

Frequencies are exact counts over 9,599 published prompts in the LocalBanana gallery — every item with a prompt longer than 20 characters, each stored with the model that ran it and the image it produced, as of August 2026. Full method in what 9,667 AI prompts actually contain.

The five slots that decide a film portrait

A film portrait prompt is a normal portrait prompt with two extra requirements: the light has a direction, and the skin has texture. Everything else is the same six-slot skeleton from the prompt engineering guide.

SlotWhat to writeWhy it matters more here
Subject and skinAge, hair, wardrobe, and one texture clauseFilm records skin as a surface, not a gradient
Light directionSource, side, hardness, what the shadow doesThe single biggest difference between film and render
Lens and apertureFocal length plus f-number, always bothDecides whether the room is in the story
Grain and colourStock reference, grain size, colour castThis is the finish, not the foundation
ExclusionsThe default look you are fightingEvery model defaults to soft, smooth, retouched

Written out as slots — which is how 13% of the corpus writes prompts, and which shows higher median engagement than prose at the same length — the template is:

Subject: [age, build, hair, wardrobe, expression, pose]
Skin: natural skin texture, visible pores and fine hairs, unedited real texture
Setting: [location, background surface, what the light falls on]
Light: [source] from [direction], [hard or diffused], [colour], [shadow behaviour]
Camera: [focal length], [aperture], [camera height], [framing distance]
Film: [stock reference], [grain size], [colour cast], [contrast behaviour]
Avoid: airbrushed skin, plastic skin, HDR, over-processed, digital sharpening
Moody Cinematic Portrait

Moody Cinematic Portrait

Moody cinematic portrait of a young woman with clear fair skin and barely-there makeup, warm natural lips. Loose dark brown hair, softly textured. Calm, self-assured expression. She's wearing a fitted black turtleneck sweater, clean lines, understated elegance. Dark minimal background fading into black. Gentle diffused front light, soft shadows, subtle film grain, organic color grading, shallow depth of field, high-end editorial feel.
Roughly 60 words, no stock name at all — diffused front light, soft shadows, subtle grain and organic colour grading do the whole job.Open in LocalBanana

✕ Bad

Beautiful portrait of a woman, shot on Kodak Portra 400, film grain, 35mm, cinematic, 8k

✓ Good

Young woman by a window, loose white silk camisole, looking outside. Soft morning light backlights her, outlining fine hairs on her shoulders. Fair skin showing unedited real texture. 35mm, f/1.4, eye level, waist-up. Natural film grain, warm highlight roll-off.

Both prompts name film. Only one of them says where the light is standing.

How to write the light slot

Direction is the least-specified thing in the corpus, and it is what separates a photograph from a render. Here is the frequency of each lighting term across all 9,599 prompts, and what each one is actually for in portrait work:

TermShare of promptsUse it for
studio lighting6.5%Controlled, even, commercial — the safe default
cinematic lighting4.8%A mood word, not a direction — pair it with one
rim light3.9%Separating hair and shoulders from a dark background
natural light3.8%Vague on its own; say which window and what time
flash3.5%Hard, direct, snapshot register, deep black background
golden hour2.7%Long warm shadows, low sun, hair glow
soft light2.6%Large source close to the subject, gentle shadow edge
backlight1.8%Halo through hair, low contrast on the face
overcast1.5%Even, shadowless, very forgiving on skin
diffused light1.3%Any source through a scrim, curtain or cloud
window light1.1%The workhorse of film portraiture, and badly under-used
side lighting0.5%Maximum texture — every pore and fabric weave shows
harsh light0.3%Deliberate ugliness, high fashion, midday sun
candlelight0.2%Warm, low, flickering, very short fall-off
top light0.05%Eye shadows, dramatic, hard to use well

The bottom half of that table is where the opportunity is. window light at 1.1% and side lighting at 0.5% are the two most film-looking light setups in existence, and almost nobody asks for them.

Backlight aimed at the hair tips rather than the face — the low-contrast, slightly melancholy register that soft film stocks are loved for.Open in LocalBanana

Three light setups worth memorising, written the way you should write them:

Window, soft, directional:
Large window camera left, soft directional daylight, gentle shadow edge
along the far cheek, no fill, background two stops darker.

Rim on dark:
Single hard source behind and slightly above, rim light along hair and
shoulder line, face lit only by bounce, background falling to black.

Direct flash:
Direct on-camera flash, hard light, sharp drop shadow on the wall behind
the subject, high contrast, no diffusion, deep surrounding darkness.

A young woman sitting sideways on a chopper motorcycle, left hand resting on the high handlebar, right hand running through wind-tousled hair with subtle rim light on edges. Confident direct gaze, slightly narrowed eyes. Languid, cool, unbothered smirk, lips slightly pressed together. Relaxed body language, legs crossed and extended on the seat.

Attire: Oversized gray sleeveless tank top. Denim shorts. Tan/camel mid-calf cowboy boots in Western style.

Vehicle: Custom chopper motorcycle with deep metallic red gas tank with gold/orange flame decals. Chrome V-twin engine visible. High ape hanger handlebars. Black leather seat. "Spring Head" text on engine cover. Motorcycle angled slightly toward camera, front wheel extending to right side of frame.

Composition: Full body shot. 85mm f/2.8 lens. Low angle, camera near ground level looking slightly up. Layered depth — foreground: motorcycle engine and chrome details; middle ground: subject on seat; background: hazy city skyline. Subject center-left, motorcycle extending right, city skyline across top third. 4:5 aspect ratio.

Lighting: Natural outdoor light, late afternoon / pre-golden hour. Right-front soft directional sunlight. Warm but not harsh, subtle rim light on hair edges, metallic reflections on chrome engine parts. Hazy air, slight atmospheric diffusion, soft halation on highlights.

Color palette: Fujifilm Classic Negative (CN) film simulation. Warm highlights with cooler teal-leaning shadows, desaturated but rich, nostalgic snapshot feel, subtle grain. Muted warm brown/camel tones from boots and tank top. Deep metallic red with gold accents on motorcycle. Hazy gray-blue sky. Natural warm skin tones. Soft warm halation in highlight roll-off. Cool teal/blue-green shadow tint. Medium-low contrast curve with lifted blacks. Subtle visible film grain. Saturation pulled back 15-20% for muted palette. Atmospheric diffusion in background.

Environment: Outdoor open area, roadside or parking lot. Hazy city skyline with high-rise buildings, urban landscape, overcast-hazy sky. Gray concrete / asphalt surface. Atmospheric haze, slight pollution/mist softening the background. American road trip / biker culture vibe.

Mood: Languid cool freedom, American biker editorial, vintage chopper culture, effortless confidence, road movie aesthetic.

Technical: photorealistic, low angle shot, film grain, atmospheric haze, soft halation, editorial fashion, motorcycle portrait, vintage Americana.

35mm or 85mm for a film portrait

The corpus prefers 85mm (4.9%) over 35mm (3.5%), which reflects how portrait-heavy the library is. For film-looking portraits specifically, the choice is not about flattery — it is about whether the room is part of the story.

Focal lengthWhat it does to a faceFilm register it suggests
24mmExaggerates whatever is nearest the lensSnapshot, phone camera, party photo
35mmFace plus environment, mild depthDocumentary, street, editorial reportage
50mmClose to how the eye reads a faceNeutral, classic 35mm-film portrait
85mmCompresses features, isolates the subjectStudio portrait, fashion, magazine cover

And then the gap that costs nothing to close. 11.1% of prompts ask for shallow depth of field; only 2.0% write f/1.8. People name the lens and hope for the opening. Write both:

✕ Bad

85mm lens, shallow depth of field, beautiful bokeh, blurred background

✓ Good

85mm, f/1.8, eye level, waist-up — background falls off to soft bokeh two metres behind her

Because 45.5% of Nano Banana prompts already carry camera specifications — the highest of the three engines — that is where a fully specified camera slot is least likely to be ignored. There are more worked examples in Nano Banana prompts.

Making skin look photographed rather than retouched

This is the step people skip, and it is the one that produces the plastic look. Models default to smooth, even, retouched skin. Film does the opposite: it records a surface.

Four clauses that work, in rough order of strength:

natural skin texture with visible pores
fine hairs visible on shoulders and forearms in the backlight
unedited real texture, no beauty retouching
slight redness across the nose and cheeks, uneven natural tone

The second one is the sleeper. Fine hair catching a backlight is a detail no retouching pipeline would leave in, so its presence reads as photographic evidence.

The negative half matters just as much. Here is an exclusion list adapted from a real gallery prompt:

Avoid: airbrushed skin, plastic skin, waxy skin, beauty filter, HDR,
over-processed, digital sharpening, soft-focus glow, 3d render, illustration

masterpiece, best quality, photorealistic, ultra-high resolution, vibrant colors, professional MV studio photography, a 3x3 photo grid collage.

A collection of 9 glamorous portraits of the same person: a stunningly beautiful K-pop idol in her early 20s. She has large, captivating double-lidded eyes, flawless porcelain skin, and long, dark, voluminous wavy hair. She is wearing an elegant, vibrant red strapless dress.

Her makeup is immaculate, inspired by a K-pop music video: shimmering eyeshadow, sharp eyeliner, and glossy, gradient lips.

Each grid cell captures a different charismatic expression and pose:
1. **Top-left:** Taking a selfie, holding a phone just out of frame, with a sweet, fan-service smile.
2. **Top-center:** A playful wink with one eye closed and a charming smile.
3. **Top-right:** A surprised expression with wide eyes and an open mouth in an "O" shape, looking adorable.
4. **Middle-left:** A cute pouting face with pursed lips, head tilted slightly, showing her "aegyo" (cuteness).
5. **Middle-center:** A joyful, radiant smile with eyes crinkled shut, exuding pure happiness.
6. **Middle-right:** A mischievous, scrunched-up face, wrinkling her nose playfully.
7. **Bottom-left:** Looking back over her shoulder, playfully sticking the tip of her tongue out.
8. **Bottom-center:** A big, happy, open-mouthed laugh, looking joyfully upwards like a candid moment.
9. **Bottom-right:** A shy, gentle smile while looking away to the side, creating a "first love" feeling.

Flawless, bright, and dynamic studio lighting, mimicking a high-budget music video set. Uses a combination of softboxes for a clean base and a subtle key light to add dimension and a glamorous sheen to her skin and hair. Clean, seamless, solid light gray studio background to make the red dress pop. Captured with a high-end portrait lens (equivalent to an 85mm f/1.2), creating a beautiful, creamy bokeh that makes the subject stand out sharply. The palette is rich and saturated, with the vibrant red of the dress as the focal point. The overall mood is charismatic, polished, and full of star quality.

What to change when it still looks wrong

Change one slot per run, in this order:

  1. Still plastic → this is the skin slot and the exclusion list, never the stock name. Add visible pores and unedited real texture, then add airbrushed skin to the exclusions.
  2. Grain looks like an overlay → reduce the grain wording to two words and raise contrast instead. Over-specified grain is the most common tell.
  3. Flat and shadowless → the light slot has no direction. Add a side and a shadow behaviour.
  4. Background too blurred to place the subject → this is the aperture, not the lens. Move from f/1.4 to f/2.8 and say the background should stay legible.
  5. Face reads generic → move the subject details earlier in the prompt and cut one adjective from the mood slot.

FAQ

How do I make AI portraits look like film?

Fix the light direction, the lens and the skin texture before you name a film stock. A prompt that says where the light stands, gives both focal length and aperture, and asks for visible pores will look more like film than one that only says "shot on Portra 400".

Why does my AI portrait have plastic-looking skin?

Because smooth retouched skin is the default output of most models. It is a texture problem, not a colour problem. Add natural skin texture with visible pores and unedited real texture to the prompt, and put airbrushed skin, plastic skin, beauty filter, HDR in the exclusions.

What lens should I specify for an AI film portrait?

85mm for a compressed, isolated studio look, 35mm when the room should stay part of the picture, 50mm for a neutral classic register. Always add the aperture as well — 11.1% of prompts in our corpus ask for shallow depth of field but only 2.0% write f/1.8.

Which model is best for film-look portraits?

Nano Banana, on the evidence of how people use it: 45.5% of its prompts carry camera specifications, against 28.0% for GPT Image and 9.6% for Midjourney. A fully specified lens-and-light slot is least likely to be ignored there.

Do I need to name a specific film stock?

No. Stock names control colour cast and grain character, which is the final ten per cent. Several of the most film-looking portraits in our gallery name no stock at all and specify only diffused light, grain and colour grading. When you do want stock-accurate colour, the Portra 400 and Pro 400H guides cover the exact vocabulary.
