Why "shot on film" alone gives you a plastic face
You add shot on Kodak Portra 400, film grain, 35mm to a portrait prompt and get back an image with a faint texture overlay on top of the same waxy, retouched face you had before.
A film name alone may leave the lighting, framing and skin treatment unclear. This guide organizes those decisions into a portrait brief. Treat the examples as creative references, not proof of physical film simulation. Related recipes are in the Portra guide, Pro 400H guide and cinematic guide.

The five slots that decide a film portrait
A film portrait prompt is a normal portrait prompt with two extra requirements: the light has a direction, and the skin has texture. Everything else is the same six-slot skeleton from the prompt engineering guide.

Both prompts name film. Only one of them says where the light is standing.
How to write the light slot
Describe the source, direction and shadow edge together. Window light can be soft or hard depending on the source and diffusion; side light can reveal texture; direct flash can create a sharp shadow. These are visual targets to inspect, not promises about a keyword.
Window backlight named explicitly: it outlines the shoulders and picks out fine hairs, which is the detail that reads as film rather than as retouching.

35mm or 85mm for a film portrait
Decide whether the room belongs in the portrait. Lens vocabulary can help describe the intention, but the frame and visible background should be stated directly.

If background blur matters, describe how much detail should remain. An aperture number is a cue, not a physical control over a generated camera:

}Making skin look photographed rather than retouched
If skin looks unnaturally smooth, describe the texture you want and inspect a close crop. The issue can involve several parts of the image, so do not assume every model has the same default or that one clause will fix it.
Four texture cues to try:
natural skin texture with visible pores
fine hairs visible on shoulders and forearms in the backlight
unedited real texture, no beauty retouching
slight redness across the nose and cheeks, uneven natural tone
Fine hair catching a backlight is one detail you can inspect. It is not proof that the image is a photograph or that it has not been retouched.
The negative half matters just as much. Here is an exclusion list adapted from a real gallery prompt:

What to change when it still looks wrong
Change one slot per run, in this order:
- Skin too smooth → try an explicit texture clause and remove conflicting retouching requests.
- Grain looks pasted on → reduce the grain emphasis and compare at the intended display size.
- Flat and shadowless → specify a source direction and shadow behaviour.
- Background too blurred → request readable background detail; do not rely only on an aperture number.
- Face feels generic → describe the distinguishing features and, when supported, compare with a suitable reference image.

How do I make AI portraits look like film?
Describe the light, framing, skin texture, colour and grain you want, then inspect them separately. A film name can be an additional reference, but this article does not establish that one wording always looks more photographic.
Why does my AI portrait have plastic-looking skin?
Inspect skin detail, light and processing cues together. You can try explicit texture wording and remove conflicting beauty-retouching terms, but compare the result rather than assuming a universal cause.
What lens should I specify for an AI film portrait?
For an isolated portrait, describe the tight framing and soft background; for an environmental portrait, ask to keep the room legible. You may add a lens reference, but verify the visible result instead of treating the number as a physical setting.
Which model is best for film-look portraits?
This article does not contain a matched model test for film-style portraits. Compare the same subject and inputs across candidate models and inspect lighting, skin, colour and texture separately.
Do I need to name a specific film stock?
